Wooden roofs

Technique, quality, style

Why choose a wooden roof?

The roof is one of the most important parts of a house. It protects the building from the elements, contributes to safeguarding the well-being of the inhabitants, plays a fundamental role in saving energy and, last but not least, helps to define the appearance of the building.

Thanks to its properties, wood represents an excellent solution for a roof that combines functionality, energy performance and aesthetics.

Over the years, Illen has become specialised in the design and construction of various load-bearing structures: solid, laminated and bi-lamellar wood, wood-concrete composite flooring.

ADVANTAGES OF WOODEN ROOFS

A wooden roof is:

LIGHT AND SAFE

The mass of wood is five times lower than that of concrete: a wooden roof places less load on the building and is therefore ideal for large span coverage, superstructures and renovation. It represents an excellent solution for earthquake-proof buildings: the force of a seismic event is proportional to the mass of the structure, which means that wooden roofs are less affected.

THERMAL INSULATION

The sensitivity of wood to thermal excursions is minimal. Its thermal conductivity is lower than that of the brick or concrete, which makes wood an excellent insulating material. It also has good soundproofing qualities.

STABLE AND FIRE RESISTANT

Although wood is combustible it is also resistant to fire. While wood burns it continues to maintain its structural function, regardless of the temperature of the fire. In contrast, steel begins to lose its load bearing capacity at temperatures of 400 °C. A wooden structure will fail only when the non-carbonised section is subjected to a stress exceeding its breaking load.

SUSTAINABLE AND RECYCLABLE

Wood is a natural material, it meets the requirements of green building, it does not pollute. The material obtained when demolishing a wooden roof can be reused.

DURABLE

Through careful design, selection of the correct timber and regular maintenance a wooden roof can last for centuries.

QUICK ASSEMBLY

Wood is easy to work with and, thanks to modern processing technologies, lends itself to the production of prefabricated elements. The result is shorter construction processes and simplified installation procedures, and hence reduced time and costs.
